Starting your own business can be tricky territory, but according to one yoga instructor and entrepreneur, the mind-body regimen and business have a lot in common. Therefore, yoga can teach prospective businesspeople how to balance life and work.
"The word 'yoga' means 'to join' and 'to unite,' and its practice aims to bring the mind and body together to work as one. Similarly, entrepreneurs juggle many different relationships, challenges and responsibilities, with the end goal of harnessing these entities to work in synch," Abbie Davies Steinbacher of The Young Entrepreneur Council wrote in U.S. News and World Report.
There are three lessons from yoga that can carry over into entrepreneurship, according to Steinbacher:
1. Entrepreneurs need to be present in the moment and not let the stress of one day carry over into the next. This means letting go of expectations and distractions.
2. There needs to be a balance between staying in one's comfort zone and constantly challenging oneself. Too much of one attitude won't lead to success, and so, as the adage goes, everything in moderation.
3. Both yoga and business take practice and patience. Taking shortcuts won't get you anywhere. The keys are setting realistic goals and being persistent in case mistakes are made.
Your local Massachusetts yoga class may be able to help. After all, you'd be in good company. According to the Yoga Journal, as of 2008, 15.8 million Americans were practicing the holistic healing technique!
