There's nothing like traveling the world to help enhance one's personal development. Seeing different areas of the earth, and the fascinating attractions that they hold, can give a person a great deal of perspective and appreciation for life. Those who are considering a trip to Africa may want to head to Kenya to explore the island of Lamu, which is home to some of the "oldest and best-preserved Swahili" architecture in East Africa.

Deemed a World Heritage Site in 2001 by UNESCO, Lamu is an interesting place off the beaten path. While many people enjoy going on a safari when heading to the African country, Lamu provides visitors with an exotic experience, thanks to its diverse population and gorgeous sweeping landscapes.

Because the buildings are built so close to each other, tourists are unable to get to the area by car, further emphasizing the city's medieval roots. It was founded in the 14th century, however, one of the most popular attractions in town is the 19th-century Lamu Fort, a hideout for government officials who were unpopular with locals.

Visitors can also check out the Donkey Sanctuary, as the animals are the most usual form of traffic in Lamu.
